Frequently Asked Questions

What is your musical experience?

I have been playing music for over 20 years and have been teaching for over 10 years. Originally I started with the accordion and later switched to guitar, later picking up bass, ukulele, piano and drum set. I've played in various different settings over the years such as in my high school's jazz bands/combos/choir, guitar ensemble in college, studio recording sessions, private gigs, in bands with friends and jam sessions of different varieties.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My lessons are always guided by the student's goals and professionally crafted to ensure that the quickest and most efficient path is taken to achieve them. I offer a distillation of my years of experience which if followed will allow the student to progress at a steady and surprising rate. I can impart and illuminate many different aspects of music but most importantly, I can show you how to practice, what to practice and explain it all in a way that uses your favorite music to further elucidate musical concepts. The tools that your favorite artist uses can be at your fingertips too.

How much do you charge for your teaching services?

Please see the pricing and policies page for a detailed breakdown of my rates.
If you're interested in group lessons or multiple lesson days, please contact me directly.

Where do you hold your lessons?

I teach out of my home in Long Beach, California. I can travel to you as well for an additional fee if you are located in the surrounding areas.

How long are lessons? Should I take multiple lessons per week?

I offer 45 minute lessons at a rate of one a week, as I find that frequency and length to be pretty optimal for most  people. If you are a very dedicated player and are interested in multiple lessons a week or longer durations, please contact me directly and we can figure something out.

When are you available to teach?

Monday-Friday from 10:00am-8:00pm.

Can you travel to me?

Yes! Although I teach mainly out of my home in Long Beach, I can travel to you as well for an additional fee as long as you're in the surrounding areas.

What levels can you teach?

All levels are welcome, from absolute beginners to advanced players.

Do you teach kids?

For kids 12 and older, Yes! I've found that middle school age is a great time for learning a stringed instrument. By that point, most kids are able to handle the physicality of playing an adult sized instrument. For students under 18 I require a parent or guardian to be present for the duration of the lesson. For the sake of everyone's time and investment, please read my practice expectations in the policy section.
